Frequently Asked Questions

  • CAPS is only able to assist students who initiate the request for help themselves or who are brought directly to the office. CAPS is unable to provide “wellness checks” either in person or over the phone.

    Anyone can walk a student over to CAPS. Students in crisis can walk in and meet with a therapist usually within an hour (between 8:00am and 4:30pm). Outside of normal business hours and on weekends, students can reach an after-hours counselor by calling 801-422-3035 and following the prompts.

    If you are concerned about a student’s safety and cannot get them to respond or come to CAPS, please call the University Police at 801-422-2222.
  • CAPS only provides services for students who are full or ¾ time.

    Faculty/Staff/Admin are encouraged to utilize BYU's Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Students in crisis can walk in and meet with a therapist usually within an hour. Students who are not in crisis but who would like to meet with a therapist can typically set up a one-time QuickCare appointment within about a week.

    The wait time for ongoing therapy is typically two to six weeks. If that wait feels too long, students can meet with a CAPS case manager to find options in the community.
  • If a student reaches the CAPS session limit, they can meet with a case manager to find options in the community for ongoing therapy.

    Students can also utilize Group Therapy or Biofeedback. There are no session limits for these options.
  • Students who are not full or ¾ time can utilize biofeedback, case management, and walk-in services at CAPS.
