How CAPS Can Help Faculty/Staff
This website provides information that may help in recognizing and responding to students in distress and making appropriate referrals. For comments or other questions, please contact Counseling and Psychological Services at 801.422.3035.
Faculty, TAs and staff will often be the first to encounter a student who is in distress. Encouraging and helping the student to seek assistance with the appropriate campus and community resources is important. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), a unit within the Counseling and Career Center, is a readily accessible point of contact for faculty, staff and students who are concerned about a distressed student.
To Contact CAPS during regular business hours:
phone 801.422.3035
walk-in services: 1500 Wilkinson Student Center, Brigham Young University
A counselor in CAPS will be available to consult about a student, provide referrals to campus departments, develop action plans, and follow up as appropriate.
Counselors are available for consultation and appointments during working hours. Our regularly scheduled walk-in crisis services are available from 10am to 4pm. CAPS also provides after-hours phone consultation for faculty, staff and students (801.422.2222; ask for the after-hours counselor) who may be concerned about a distressed student during evenings, weekends, or holidays.
If there is a potential for danger to self/others or immediate attention is needed, call Campus Police (911 or 801.422.2222).
